Ghost Wolf
digital collage, 2022
Inspired by The Ghost Wolves of Galveston, NYT, (1/3/22), the canid drawings used in this digital work portray a “ghost wolf”- a coyote carrying dna from the near extinct Red Wolf, a Red Wolf, and the ghost of the extinct species. They’re brought together in a gif, cycling endlessly between the three iterations. U.S. Fish and Game Red wolf, canis rufus recovery program updates can be found here. As of October 2021 there are 8 known, collared red wolves in the wild, an estimated 8 others in the wild, and 241 captive as part of a species survival plan. Efforts are regularly hindered because of vehicles, poaching and habitat fragmentation due to increasing development.
