Gilligan’s Island Establishing Shots
artist’s book, 75 postcards, custom vinyl binder, 2021
two-channel video installation, black and white, sound, 2021
Gilligan’s Island Establishing Shots, a two-channel installation, pairs every establishing shot (tropical landscapes) in the first season of the 1970s tv sit-com, with scenes where the characters listen to their ever functioning radio - their only connection with home and civilization. Though the original tv show is rife with problematic aspects - specifically misogyny and colonial overtones, my investigation concentrates on in-between moments to do with a more generalized narrativity (the extent to which media tells a story), and narrative discourse (how that story is told).
The singular artist’s book is a custom vinyl binder holding 75 postcards.
