Rainbow
2:00, single channel video, 2001
Rainbow depicts an incidental narrative: a documentary moment lasting only two minutes - one that seemed important and meaningful enough to be captured on videotape. There is no editing of sound or image except beginning and end points. This is meant to indicate that this moment existed in the 'real' world and in real time, in contrast to the highly constructed nature of traditional narrative cinema and of the media in general.
Location: the Hollywood Park racetrack where people mill about waiting for the next horserace, and watch simulcast racing on monitors with anticipation. The way dejection or elation is worn on the body is revealed as is the melancholic tinge added, or embellished through the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" piped in over a loudspeaker.
